Legality of Exotic Pets
Laws regulating exotic pet ownership differ by state, each defining "exotic" uniquely. Generally, states prohibit ownership of animals deemed invasive or dangerous to humans or the environment. It's essential to consult local regulations before acquiring an exotic pet to ensure legality as some veterinarians will not treat illegal animals.
Common Exotic Pets
Commonly kept exotic pets include:
- Small mammals: guinea pigs, hamsters, chinchillas, hedgehogs, sugar gliders, ferrets
- Reptiles: various species of lizards, snakes, and turtles
- Birds: parrots, canaries, finches, chickens and other fowl
- Invertebrates: tarantulas, snails, Madagascar hissing cockroaches
- Fish: numerous freshwater and saltwater species
The classification of rabbits as exotic varies, despite their domestication. Additionally, some individuals keep wild animals like non-domesticated felines (e.g., tigers, servals) and canines (e.g., wolves, foxes) as pets, though this is often subject to strict legal regulations.
Safety Considerations
Not all exotic pets are dangerous; many, like guinea pigs and hamsters, are suitable for families. However, certain species can pose risks to humans or ecosystems. For example, the Giant African land snail is illegal in the U.S. due to its potential to spread diseases and harm the environment. Additionally, skunks and racoons are illegal pets in Minnesota due to their ability to carry and spread rabies.
Veterinary Care for Exotic Pets
While some veterinarians treat exotic pets, not all have the necessary training or experience. Prospective exotic pet owners should identify local veterinarians qualified to care for their chosen species. Dr. Lucca at Homeward Bound Animal Clinic has spent considerable time working with and learning about exotic animals. While not a board-certified exotic specialist, she feels confident in providing veterinary care for many of these animals. Check out her info page to learn about her past and present experience.
