Disaster Preparedness
Disasters are not something we can always predict. At Homeward Bound Animal Clinic, we want to provide our pet families with tips to help in case of an emergency because during chaos, your pets needs could be overlooked or left behind. Being prepared is important for disasters such as wildfires, floods, power outages, and other severe weather challenges that occur without warning. If it is not safe for you, it is not safe for your pet. |
Ahead of Disaster
Create a Pet Emergency Kit
- Food and water bowls. Collapsible bowls do not take up much space in a kit.
- Scissors and a can opener.
- Current medications.
- Secure carriers, leashes, and harnesses.
- Cat litter, litter box, if possible.
- Comfort items and familiar toys.
|
|
Have a Plan Established
- Verify that your pet's microchip information is current.
- Update ID tags with accurate contact details.
- Collect your pets most recent medical records. Save digitally to your phone.
- Research local pet-friendly shelters and boarding facilities.
- Save important phone numbers, such as your pet's veterinarian.
- Prepare livestock-specific emergency plans when applicable.

During an Emergency
 |
|
Remain Calm: Your pet will sense if you are in distress and can cause more panic.
Bring Your Pets With You: Never leave pets behind if you are forced to evacuate.
Use Carriers or Leashes: Even the calmest pets may panic and run away during disasters, especially if there are loud noises in the environment, such as sirens or thunder.
|
After an Emergency
After an emergent event, it is important to monitor your pet for stress or illness. Some pets may experience anxiety, changes in behaviors or injuries from the event. Request an appointment with your veterinarian right away if you need help monitoring your pet after a stressful event. |
